Guidelines for walking the Labyrinth

If you are walking the Labyrinth for the first time, it may be helpful to think of your journey as being a prayer walk that has several stages:

  1. Before starting
Take time to become aware of the surroundings, the stillness or the music, the fragrance, the presence of the building. We do ask that shoes be removed, and if necessary, socks are provided, to help protect the Labyrinth surface. When you are ready, move forward towards the entrance of the Labyrinth. You may need to wait for others entering or leaving.

There is no right of wrong way to walk it, but it is best to keep your eyes focused on the path ahead, so you do not step over the lines, and reverse your direction. If others are walking the Labyrinth - when you meet them, simply move to one side, but be sure to step back onto the same path again.

  2. The Blessing
When ready to begin, pause at the threshold of the Labyrinth, and ask inwardly for what you personally need during your walk. Is there any particular gift you would ask of God? You may want to use the following prayer by Shirley Murray:

"As my feet walk the way And I center my thought Let the curve of the path Turn me inward to peace."

Now try to relax, become conscious of your breathing, and when ready, begin your journey.

  3. The journey inward
Enter the path at your own pace. Focus on your steps and on the path in front of you. Let your mind be open and receptive to the experience of gently walking the path ahead of you. If you are distracted by other thoughts, simply let them go when you become aware of them, and return your focus to each step you take along the path.

  4. The centre
When you reach the centre, sit or stand, facing whichever direction you choose. The centre is a place for meditation, for waiting, for listening and prayer. Stay as long as you like. Open your spirit to receive what is there for you. You may want to use the prayer word "Ma-ra-na-tha" (Come, Lord) as you wait in openness.

  5. The journey out
When you are ready, begin your journey back. As you retrace your steps, focus your attention on any experience, blessings or insights you have received, and on the healing Presence journeying with you.

  6. Before you Leave
Before leaving the building, pause for a few moments to reflect on your experience and give thanks. As soon as possible, write down a few comments in your journal.
  • What insights came to you?
  • What feelings did you experience?
  • What gift did the Labyrinth offer you?

Doing this will help you remember and integrate your Labyrinth experience.

An Arohanui Blessing from Joy Cowley

May the mystery of God enfold me.
May the wisdom of God uphold me.
May the fragrance of God be around me.
May the brightness of God renew me.
May the loving of God flow through me.
May the peace of God deeply move me.
May the moving of God bring me peace.
Amen
